- Sauvignon Blanc, Bronze at Decanter World Wine Awards.
- Sauvignon Blanc, Silver at Concours Mondial du Sauvignon.
- Verdejo Cien x Cien, Silver at Concours Mondial de Bruxelles.
The Vinos’s Sanz Finca La Colina wines have been consolidated as the best Spanish white wines among the best in the world. This spring, the dean winery of the Denomination of Origin Rueda, has won a medal in the three world-renowned wine-making competitions. Its variety, Finca La Colina Sauvignon Blanc, have been awarded with the Bronze medal at the Decanter World Wine Awards (DWWA) and the Silver medal at the Concours Mondial du Sauvignon. Finca La Colina Verdejo Cien x Cien have been also awarded as with the Silver medal in the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles, in addition to the mention achieved in the DWWA.
Finca La Colina is one of the few wines recognized with medals in 2016 in the three major international competitions, from which it accumulates a total of 21 metals between 2010 and 2016. “This is not a matter of luck,” says Ana Carbajo, Sales Director of Vinos Sanz. “Experts from many countries have valued the work behind our wines,” she adds. During the last six years, other national and international prizes such as Gold Bacchus, Great Gold Zarcillo, Gold Zarcillo and the Gold Medal of Mundus Vini are added to the mentioned ones.
On the other hand, Finca La Colina Sauvignon Blanc rises from 91 to 93 points in the Peñín Guide 2016. Once again, part of the exclusive club of ‘the best wines of Spain’, those that the illustrious catalog places between 93 and 100 points. Finca La Colina Verdejo Cien x Cien is once again touching Olimpo, maintaining the 91 of 2015. “Every harvest is different and the raw material does not always allow you to get better results,” says Ana Carbajo. “Over the medals, our main prize is regularity,” she adds.
His Bronze in the DWWA 2016 “definitively consecrates” the Finca La Colina Sauvignon Blanc at the international market, after having won the Gold Medals in Sauvignon and Brussels in 2015. “Despite being highly valued in the World Sauvignon Contest since the first year, the Decanter award had been difficult to achieve”, acknowledges Ana Carbajo. “The Sauvignon Blanc grape is produced in many countries and present different nuances in each region,” she explains. Although this year the Silver Medal reinforces its prestige in Sauvignon, the Bronze of the Decanter “is a recognition to its singularity”. Finca La Colina Cien x Cien Verdejo renews its Silver in the World-wide one of Brussels.
The World Wine Festival
Finca La Colina has competed with wines from the five continents between the three major contests. More than 16,000 international samples have participated in the DWWA 2016, the largest global competition in the sector. Its 244 judges including 69 international wine masters, as well as sommeliers, regional experts and journalists. The blind tastings of their week of tasting took place from 25 to 29 April at Tobacco Dock, East London. His full list of results is published on June 6 at Decanter.com.
In addition, more than 9,000 varieties from 46 countries took part in the 23rd Concours Mondial de Bruxelles, from 29 April to 1 May in the Bulgarian city of Plovdiv. 320 judges chose the winners of the first contest that establishes a posteriori control of the winning wines, in order to guarantee the legitimacy of their results. On the other hand, from the 4th to the 5th of March, the Valladolid region of Rueda hosted the seventh edition of the Concours Mondial du Sauvignon. 74 judges from 23 countries sampled nearly 900 international samples.
“Each harvest implies the new challenge of maintaining or exceeding the previous level of quality,” recalls Ana Carbajo. “For our wines to maintain their strong personality and their own style, it is fundamental to continue the same line of elaboration,” she adds. “The national and international awards not only reward the work months of each vintage, but also endorse the regularity of a path,” she concludes.
The Verdejo and Sauvignon Blanc grapes from the Monovarietales Finca La Colina are obtained from the oldest vineyards of the Sanz Vinos vineyards. Both Verdejo Cien x Cien and Sauvignon Blanc “are of great complexity, elegance and expressiveness”, emphasizes Ana Carbajo. Comprehensive care, rigorous selection and low and controlled productions characterize its elaboration. “A real jewel inside a bottle”.

Challenges of the 21st century
Founded in 1870, Vinos Sanz is the oldest winemaker of the Denomination of Origin Rueda. Six generations have taken care of the vines of Verdejo and Sauvignon Blanc from their Castilian fields, which now house about 100 hectares. When the wine was marketed at 12 reales per arroba and was transported in ox and mule wagons, the Donatos family bet on an indigenous and then unknown strain, Verdejo. The splendor of Vinos Sanz comes from its grapes, sprouted from a hard earth that imposes its differences. Its elegance in the glass translates the effort of climate, soil and man.
In 1980 the D.O. Rueda consecrates the quality of white wines of a unique variety in the world. Vinos Sanz updates the wine technology of its winery so that the alchemy of the wine grape expresses the personality of its vineyards. Among its challenges for the 21st century, to consolidate the international projection of a brand present in the markets of 20 countries. Currently, the company is reviewing the architectural project of a second winery in the heart of Rueda.
In 2013 Vinos Sanz undertakes its own project in the D.O. Wines of Madrid. For this adventure, the company has the collaboration of Orusco, the oldest winery in the region. In May of 2015born the first of its wines, Sanz La Capital, with grapes of old strains of Tempranillo of Madrid. A fruit red wine as a project of past, present and future, continued with Sanz La Capital Roble.
“Madrid, Madrid, Madrid…pedazo de la España en que nací.”
The tradition of the wines of Madrid dates back to the thirteenth century and its wine legacy reaches to our days ready to satisfy the most demanding palates of the capital and the rest of the world.
The D. O. Vinos de Madrid was established in 1990 and is the first Denomination of Origin associated with a capital of the world. It has three sub-zones perfectly selected: Arganda del Rey, Navalcarnero and San Martín de Valdeiglesias. These three zones, located in the southern part of the Community of Madrid, differ slightly in the soil used for growing vines and climatology, so that the final characteristics of their wines are different.
But first of all, let’s start with a bit of history …
Once upon a time … the wines of Madrid.
It is believed that their lineage arises from the presence of the Romans in the area, lovers of the vines and, above all, the drink obtained from its fruits. However, it is not known with certainty, until in the thirteenth century the first documents that ensure winemaking appear, in which it was intended to settle an agreement of distribution of a vineyard between monks and their feudal lord.
Already in the fifteenth century was such a production and recognition of this wine that the authorities were forced to establish protectionist measures. During the Golden Age and after the election of Madrid as capital of the kingdom there was an important economic development accompanied by some native wines in the rise.
The cultivation of the grapevine remained in growth despite the general impoverishment and demographic decline that was experienced during the later years. However, this expansion was halted by a plague of phylloxera that affected the vineyards of the area causing havoc in its production.
But the story did not end at this point, much less. After an important effort, the wines of Madrid have managed to recover in recent decades the attractive prestige that backed it in the past. They have been making a dent in important bars and restaurants as well as international exportation.
And is that the wines of Madrid do not leave anyone indifferent … They are cooler than an 8!
Why not dare to try them?
Madrilízate! With Sanz La Capital

No one expected much from the appellation of origin, created in 1990, Vinos de Madrid. On the one hand, the name: so attractive, urban, modern … But far from any association in the collective imagination with the wine business. On the other, the city: can a good wine come out of a space with so many people, both car and movement?
Last week was presented a new Madrid red: Sanz The Capital Oak. A strong proposal that aims to sneak into the bars among the popular names: “We propose Wines of Madrid as an alternative to Rioja and Ribera del Duero in bars and restaurants in Madrid,” said Ana Carbajo, commercial director of Vinos Sanz.
Discreetly, the wines from Madrid have become a niche in the menus of interesting places in the capital, such as Manu, an elegant mix of syrah, garnacha and merlot, among others, or the various proposals of the winery Bernabeleva in San Agustín Of Valdeiglesias; Cantocuerdas is one of their labels.
The last presentation of Vinos Sanz collects all that legacy and, in its new campaign, it encourages to drink wine to the shout of Madrilízate! “We would like the Madrid public to identify with their region when it comes to ordering a wine. Also that tourists start to hear that in Madrid wine is also made. ”
To impress on the capital character of their proposals, the labels of their bottles show two scenes very capital: a stamp of the Paseo de la Castellana or one of the gardens of Madrid River. Sanz Capital Oak is described as “a red 100% tempranillo”. With grapes coming from the banks of the Tajuña, in the area of Valdilecha. “Her four-month stump of wood brings balance, maintaining the expressiveness of the red fruit of this grape,” says Sylvia Iglesias, technical director of Vinos Sanz and winemaker author of the wine.

On Wednesday, April 20th, we had the honor of presenting a new member that has joined our family: the new Madrid red wine, Sanz La Capital Roble.
The event was held in a fantastic restaurant castizo as is the Restaurant Viva Madrid, and participated, among others, Ana Carbajo, our Commercial Director; Daniel Orusco, oenologist and Technical Director of Bodegas Orusco; And the president of D.O. Wines of Madrid, Juan Bautista Orusco.
A special mention should also be made of our winemaker, Sylvia Iglesias, creator of the essence of this fantastic wine from the capital.
The tasting and tasting of our Sanz La Capital reds were accompanied at all times by the cuisine of Emilio González and María Iglesias (Viva Madrid) and the artisan products of Lino Moreno (La Rioja).
This proposal is undoubtedly an “alternative to Rioja and Ribera del Duero, in bars and restaurants in Madrid”.
In short, “we would like the Madrid audience to identify with their region when it comes to ordering a wine and to start to hear that Madrid also has wine”
Thank you very much to all! Because it is proven that the best pairing for wine is good company.

A new Madrid red wine has arrived in the city. Vinos Sanz presents its varietal Sanz La Capital Roble, from the Denomination of Origin Wines of Madrid. The event is held on Wednesday, April 20 from 11:30 at Restaurante Viva Madrid (C / Manuel Fernández y González, 7). Sanz Introduces The Capital Roble Ana Carbajo, Commercial Director of Vinos Sanz. Daniel Orusco, oenologist and Technical Director of Bodegas Orusco, directs the tasting of wines as an expert in wines of the region. Among other authorities, Mr. Juan Bautista Orusco, President of the D.O. Vinos de Madrid. Access with invitation, after confirmation of attendance.
The tasting begins two marriages of the young Sanz La Capital. First an intense but light entree, the croquettes Viva Madrid de morcillo with Iberian ham. Then, beans with oxtail potatoes, specialty of Lino Moreno from La Rioja, balance the strength of the red. Sanz Capital Oak debuts with stuffed peppers in tomato sauce. Due to its tannic load and to the presence of the wood, the pairing of the oak reaches its peak with the strength of the “callos” from Madrid of Viva Madrid.
“We propose Vinos de Madrid as an alternative to Rioja and Ribera del Duero in bars and restaurants in Madrid,” says Ana Carbajo. “Both our young man and the oak are pleasant and good value for money,” he concludes. “Sanz La Capital Roble has a palate and frank aroma and leaves a pleasant aftertaste”, says Emilio González, manager of Viva Madrid. “Accompany the flavors of our meats, like the tail of a bull,” he adds. It is a red 100% Tempranillo from the shores of the Tajuña, in Valdilecha. “Her four-month stint for wood brings balance, maintaining the expressiveness of the red fruit of this grape,” says Sylvia Iglesias, Technical Director of Vinos Sanz and winemaker. Also born in 2015, happens to his namesake young in the Wines of Madrid collection of Vinos Sanz.
¡Madrilízate!
In a daring bet of corporate image, the labels of Sanz La Capital and Sanz La Capital Roble reproduce two distinct landscapes of Madrid. The first shows the Paseo de la Castellana and the second the Madrid River area. Both are far from the traditional wine labeling and its originality attracts the attention of the public in bars in Madrid and the rest of Spain. Under the slogan ‘Madrilízate’, the image campaign of Sanz La Capital tries to make the Madrid public identify with the wines of its region. Its renewed website www.vinossanz.com keeps up to date news about the brand.
Opened in 1856, Restaurante Viva Madrid (C / Manuel Fernández y González, 7) dispatched the wines from Rueda de Vinos Sanz back in 1927, the original date of the façade that the realist painter Amalia Viva immortalized in 1978. His painting Bar ‘Viva Madrid ‘Is exhibited in the Museum of Contemporary Art of the capital of Spain. In one of the two gates of the place is the old label of the oldest winery of the Denomination of Origin Rueda, founded in 1870. Since then six generations have taken care of the vines of verdejo and sauvignon blanc from their Castilian fields, About 100 hectares.
Nota de cata. Sylvia Iglesias.
Attractive cherry color, clean and bright. Red fruits accompanied by light tones of cocoa, vanilla and roasted. Franco and intense. Balanced, elegant and long. Friendly tannin that gives a pleasant velvety feel, without forgetting its power and great structure. Broad and fleshy.
Vinos Sanz takes its first wine passed by casks of all its collection, whether in its white wines of Rueda or Madrid reds. It is a 100% Tempranillo wine, from the O.D. Wines of Madrid and with 14% alcohol. Its presentation is very attractive, showing another distinctive and recognizable landscape of the capital of Spain, the bank of the Manzanares (Madrid River), as it has been done the young wine Sanz La Capital where another emblem of Madrid is represented as Paseo de la Castellana.
Sanz The Capital Roble was born as a perfect complement to its namesake young wine (Sanz La Capital). Its passage through wood for 4 months contributes a great balance maintaining the expressiveness of the red fruit typical of this intense varietal.
This wine shows an attractive cherry color, clean and bright. In the nose we can feel red fruits accompanied by light tones of cocoa, vanilla and roasted. Franco and Inteso. In the mouth we see that it is a balanced, elegant and long wine. A pleasant tannin that gives it a pleasant velvety feel without forgetting its power and great structure. Broad and fleshy.
This is the second product of D.O. Wines of Madrid from our collection and both were born during this 2015. A project that is slowly being consolidated thanks to the first great response received by the public with Sanz La Capital.
We are sure you will like it very much!
If in 2013 our Finca La Colina Sauvignon Blanc was awarded a Grand Zarcillo de Oro, this time it has been our Finca La Colina Verdejo who has achieved a Gold Zarcillo in the presumed Zarcillo 2015 Awards.
The competition was held in Valladolid on 29 and 30 April and 1 and 2 May, organized once again by the Junta de Castilla y León. This year 2015 has been the XVI national edition and its VIII international, and throughout these years this contest has been consolidated as the most important of the Spanish wines and, little by little, is also getting to be one of the most prestigious at the international level.
Wines from all the world’s producing countries can be included, and although we do not have the official participation data for this year, the total number of wines presented in the last edition of 2013 was 1819, of which 36% were wines of Castilla y León.
Finally, remember that this is the third international recognition of great prestige for Finca La Colina Verdejo during this 2015, after the Silver Medal received by the Concours Mondial du Bruxelles and the Bronze Medal at the Decanter World Wine Awards. We have completed the medal podium!
Last October 29 was held the annual presentation of the prestigious Peñín Guide 2016. This time the venue chosen for the Hall of the Best Wines of Spain was the Municipal Palace of Congresses of Madrid and it was attended by about 4000 people , Mainly professionals. The event had more than 440 wines belonging to about 200 wineries in 15 autonomous communities, with more than 50 production areas represented.
With regard to our wines, one more year we can say that they are placed in the head train of the wines of Rueda in terms of quality is concerned. Our young wines achieve the best grades within their respective families if we look at wines of similar characteristics, so we can proudly say that we continue to produce one of the best collections of white wine from Rueda and Spain, according to the Peñín Guide.
The main novelty in our wines is that we have presented for the first time to the contest our semi sweet ¨Fri Sanz Te¨. This is the second vintage of this wine. It is a personal bet of the winery that saw the light back there by May 2014 and that, despite being the wine “different” from our whites, we wanted to continue in the same line of quality as the rest of dry wines from our assortment .
Our ratings are as follows:
- Sanz Clásico: 89 points
- Sanz Verdejo: 90 points
- Sanz Sauvignon: 89 points
- Fri Sanz Te: 88 points
- Finca La Colina Verdejo CIENXCIEN: 91 points
- Finca La Colina Sauvignon Blanc: 93 points
Obviously, the tastings have been made to the 2014 vintage of our wines, which we consider one of the best in recent years within the enormous regularity that our products have added after vintage year after year.
We hope to continue with this regularity in our scores in the following competitions of the Peñín Guide. A constancy over the years and vintages that we believe identifies and differentiates us.
